A kamado will last for years, but it needs proper maintenance. Fortunately, this can be done in a few simple steps. By keeping your barbecue clean and in good condition, you'll maintain good temperature control and always be ready for your next session. Cleaning accessories
After each session, start by cleaning the grate. Ideally, do this while it's still warm; then you can easily scrub off any food residue with a brush. For stubborn residue, open both sliders and let the kamado heat up to about 250°C. This will ensure everything burns cleanly, eliminate bacteria, and allow you to easily wipe the grate clean afterward.
Ash buildup at the bottom of your kamado can disrupt airflow, directly affecting your temperature control. Therefore, it's important to remove the ash regularly. Use an ash poker or empty the ash collection tray if your kamado has one. A good time to do this is when refilling your charcoal.
If you're not using your kamado for a while, make sure you protect it properly. Don't put your barbecue away until it's completely cooled down, preferably the next morning. Use a breathable protective hat and leave both air vents slightly open to allow trapped moisture to escape. This prevents mold growth, even under a canopy or cover.
The exterior also deserves attention. Clean the ceramic with a soft cloth, warm water, and a special kamado cleaner. This removes dirt and grease without damaging the surface. If your kamado has a glossy finish, you can use a kamado polisher to even out the finish and remove dull spots.
You can regularly treat the wooden side tables and handles of your kamado with maintenance oil. This protects the wood from moisture and drying out and prevents cracking or discoloration.
With regular maintenance, your kamado will not only stay looking great for longer, but also reliable with every use. Want more tips or personalized advice? Visit our showroom in Venlo or discover the right cleaning products and accessories directly in our webshop. Cleaning accessories
